How to Overcome Procrastination and Get the Job Done

Days come when one feels his energy ebbing. There are instant solutions for this. One can get perked by a cup of coffee or a brisk walk. And yet, one can still find himself bogged down by a sluggish attitude that affects performance and slows down the team’s productivity.

What causes people to procrastinate and what should one do to overcome it? Sheila Viesca, TalkShop CEO explains, “It is a matter of attitude. Sometimes, laziness takes over.Often, it is overthinking or fear of taking on a task. Whatever the reason, a person has to be aware of this shortcoming, be open and willing to change this lazy mindset.

She offers these tips:

1. Stop over-focusing on the task. Too much planning can be counter-productive. Just take the first step, and keep moving forward.

2. Don’t be overwhelmed by the processes. If they appear complex, break it into simpler steps.

3. Do the most complicated tasks at the start of the day. You will feel the load lighten as you finish, leaving the rest of the day easier to manage.

4. Visualize. Think of the gains to be had when you accomplish the task.

5. Set goals. Deal with the inertia by living life with purpose.

Beating the Monday Blues

Feeling anxious about starting the work week is more common than you think. Monday blues has become a phenomenon, just like the Tuesday blahs, and the Wednesday itch. Sheila Viesca, TalkShop CEO, points out, “One’s emotional state can impact his performance. Feeling distressed about going to work can make one feel indifferent and less engaged, dampening the mood for others in the workplace. When such situations happen often, these steps can help one get in the proper frame of mind:

1. Find out why. Knowing the triggers can help you snap out of it.

2. Wrap up unfinished business by Friday to leave Mondays open.

3. Enjoy the weekend to feel recharged.

4. Look your best on Mondays. This will help you start the week with confidence.

5. Think positive. Dump the complaints and dwell on what is good about your job.

6. Let the light in. Sunshine and a nice view does wonders in lifting one’s mood.

7. Do something special after work to reward yourself at the end of a day.

Viesca adds, “Reframing your thoughts can make all the difference in your outlook. Make it a constant practice to stay on top of your game.”
